DEFERDAR’S GATE

WHERE IS IT ?

Deferdar's Gate is situated in the middle of the northwest rampart of the Upper Town, near the Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Fountain.

THE HISTORY

The name of the gate derives from the Turkish word 'defterdar,' signifying the financial administrator. In the medieval period, the location of Defterdar's Gate was occupied by the so-called North Gate, connecting the Upper and Lower Towns.

The present gate was erected in the last decade of the 17th century, during the Austrian rule when fortification works were underway. The external arched portal, surmounted by a triangular pediment, was constructed according to the design by Andrea Cornaro. It acquired its Turkish name in the 18th century when the Ottomans reoccupied Belgrade. Defterdar's Gate underwent restoration in 1960.
