BLOK 3

WHERE IS IT?

It is bordered by the Paris Commune street, the street of National Heroes, Student street and the Zoran Đinđić Boulevard.

HISTORY

The urban plan for the block was conceived by architect Vera Paunović, who turned 100 in 2024, making her the oldest woman in serbian architecture. Construction began in 1968 and was finished in the early 1970's.  The dimensions are 400x400, which was the standard dimension for blocks.

Executive building of the "11th April" preschool

Apart from residential buildings, the block also contained the kindergarten "Šećerko", primary school „Ivan Gundulić“, as well as the primary school „Novi Beograd“ for children with disabilities. In addition to this, the executive building of the "11th April" preschool was constructed.

The first primary school of New Belgrade was built in 1959 and it still houses the primary school "New Belgrade". Two years later, in 1961, a second building, for the primary school "Ivan Gundulić" was erected with a much higher capacity for students.

Later, on the edge of the block alongside the Zoran Đinđić Boulevard, a building for commercial purposes was constructed.

The local community which this block belonged to was called Viktor Bubanj, and the local community day was celebrated on May 21st, the day the community was founded in 1964.

In the 1990's, a McDonalds in postmodernist style was built on the corner of National Heroes and Paris Commune street.

APPEARANCE

9 residential lamellas, made of reinforced concrete with 5 and 8 floors, as well as garages on their ground levels, were initially built in Block 3. This was one of the few blocks with no skscrapers. According to its appearance, two types of buildings were built: in the southeastern part, there are 5 9-story buildings, which aesthetically match the buildings in the neighboring Block 1. On the southeastern side, the buildings are covered in profiled sheet metal which serve as protection from unfavorable climate conditions.  Also, long lamellas are sporadically broken with passageways which make movement around the block easier. It was built in the style of industrial modernism.

The northwestern part of the block contains 4 5-story brutalist buildings, with facades made of raw concrete characterized by horizontal shifts of windows and balconies. The block also contains green surfaces, vegetation, as well as children's playgrounds and sports centres.

Like in other parts of New Belgrade, football ultras have marked their territory here with graffiti as well. Partizan fans have painted two of their fellow citizens on murals: Nenad Vulić Nefa and Nikola Sekulić. Traditionally, a five-a-side football tournament in honor of Nikola Sekulić takes place every year. The mural belongs to the football ultras style with its iconography.
