Starting from the 11th century with the strengthening of medieval Hungary, conflicts between The Hungarian Kingdom and The Byzantine Empire over the territory of Belgrade became more frequent. For a short time in 1071/1072, the Hungarian army had conquered Belgrade. After the Byzantines had returned to power in Belgrade in the early 12th century, constant Hungarian-Byzantine conflicts over dominance over Belgrade had resumed. In the surrounding areas of Belgrade, the Hungarians provided continuous support to opponents of Byzantine rule. At that time, the populace of Belgrade was greatly divided between supporters of the Byzantine Empire and supporters of the Hungarian Kingdom.
However, with the peace treaty of 1167, Belgrade enjoyed a certain period of peace. It’s known that in 1230. In the first half of the 13th century, Belgrade was Hungarian border territory. After a period during which Belgrade was in the possession of Serbian ruler Dragutin, the Hungarian Kingdom once again took control over the city until the 15th century. With the contract Despot Stefan Lazarević had with Hungarian king Sigismund in 1426, Belgrade had once more fallen into Hungarian authority after the Despot died. Following the appearance of Ottomans, Belgrade had become a constant target of their conquests. Sultan Suleiman The Magnificent conquered Belgrade in 1521, which marked a permanent loss of territory the Hungarian Kingdom had over Belgrade.
