The settlement of Sephardic Jews in the area of Belgrade began back in 1521 - the year when the Ottomans conquered Belgrade. We associate the settlement of Sephardic Jews with the 16th century, while the Ashkenazi Jews immigrated to Belgrade during the 18th century. Their number gradually increased during the 19th and first half of 20th century. During the 16th century, several Jewish Communities and synagogue were mentioned in Belgrade.
