CHURCH OF ST. CYRIL AND METHODIUS

WHERE IS IT?

Catholic Church of St. Cyril and Methodius is located at Požeška street 35 on Banovo brdo.

THE HISTORY

The church was designed for the Lazarist monastic order. The Lazarists, who were entrusted with this parish, bought a house in Čukarica and, immediately after their arrival on Banovo brdo, proceeded with the construction. The project solution was entrusted to Blaž Katušić . Already in 1929, the Church was opened.

The church has an important place in the history of the Holocaust in Serbia, because first parish priest of the church, Andrej Tumpej, was awarded the
“Righteous Among the Nations”, an honorary title given by Israel to non-Jewish citizens of the world who saved the lives of Jews during World War II.

Church of St. Cyril and Methodius was built as a single-nave hall-type church with a bell tower. From the outside it looks simple with a more decorative western facade dominated by a portal with a lunette where there is a relief with the figures of St. Cyril and Methodius and the inscription "May all be one". The tall belfry is recessed in relation to the facade and placed on the south side.

Janez Valentičič, a student of prominent architect Jože Plečnik, also participated in the later adaptations of the interior, in the sixties of the 20th century.
