HAJDUK FOUNTIAN AND THE PRINCE MIHAILO MEMORIAL

WHERE IS IT?

Hajdučka Fountain and the Prince Mihailo Assassination Memorial are located at the eastern foothills of Belgrade's Košutnjak Park, to the right of the road leading to Pionirski Grad.

THE HAJDUK FOUNTAIN

The Hajdučka česma is located in a protected natural reserve of oak trees in the eastern part of Košutnjak, Belgrade. It is one of the oldest masonry fountains in Belgrade.

Historical sources indicate that the fountain was constructed in 1828. The current appearance of the fountain, featuring three taps set in arched openings in a neorenaissance style, dates back to the late 19th century.
In the immediate vicinity is the site where Prince Mihailo Obrenović was assassinated in 1868.

Hajdučka česma gained particular popularity after 1977 when a rock concert by the band "Bijelo Dugme" was held nearby, often regarded as Yugoslavia's Woodstock. Approximately 80,000 visitors attended the concert and freely enjoyed the rock spectacle in socialist Yugoslavia at that time.

Although it was connected to the city water supply during the interwar period, natural spring water is still drawn from here today.

MONUMENT TO PRINCE MIHAILO

Prince Mihailo Obrenović, the ruler of Serbia, was assassinated on May 29, 1868, in Košutnjak, near Belgrade. The assassination of Prince Mihailo marked the first true political assassination in modern Serbia.

Shortly thereafter, an initiative was launched to erect a monument, but monument was never built. Instead, in 1912, the site of his assassination was marked by a stone fence with chains and a memorial plaque. The area remained neglected for a long time, and it wasn't until 2020 that conservation work was carried out and plaques were installed.

The perpetrators of the conspiracy to assassinate the prince were the Radovanović brothers, who allegedly sought revenge against the prince for the imprisonment of their brother, Ljubomir Radovanović. All conspirators were brought to trial, and they were all sentenced to death on the same day.

The masterminds behind this assassination were never uncovered.
