FEM BG
Women’s Voices explores the creative and social contributions of women, regardless of whether they explicitly identify with feminist values, beliefs, or perspectives. Feminist culture, on the other hand, represents the creative expression of women who align themselves with the ideology of the feminist movement.
From the early 20th century, the first suffragettes fought for voting rights, access to education, and labor rights. During the Second World War, women were an active part of the anti-fascist resistance, while the post-war period brought formal equality alongside the continued struggle for true emancipation.
In the 1990s, feminist organizations such as Women in Black and the Center for Women’s Studies emerged as powerful voices against war, violence, and patriarchal structures. Today, feminist Belgrade lives on through artistic initiatives, activist groups, and ongoing struggles for reproductive rights, gender equality, and freedom of expression.
WOMEN’S VOICES IN SERBIA
The women’s rights movement in Serbia began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when women organized to fight for voting rights, access to education, and better working conditions. Early organizations, such as the Circle of Serbian Sisters, advocated for women’s social and political rights. Throughout history, the movement’s key demands have included political participation, economic and labor rights, the fight against violence against women, and reproductive autonomy.
FEMINISTS OF BELGRADE
Belgrade’s feminists have been pioneers in the fight for women’s rights from the late 19th century to the present day. Delfa Ivanić and Katarina Milovuk advocated for women’s education and social emancipation, while in the second half of the 20th century, activists raised their voices against war and patriarchal structures. Today, feminist initiatives in Belgrade continue this struggle through activism, art, and education, emphasizing equality and justice.
