The bust of the Russian prince, military leader, and saint Alexander Nevsky was unveiled in 2021 in the courtyard of the Church of St. Alexander Nevsky in Belgrade, as a gift from the city of Saint Petersburg marking the 800th anniversary of his birth. The bust was created by the sculptor Andrey Dementyev.<\/p>\n

The unveiling ceremony was attended by high-ranking religious, political, and diplomatic representatives from both Serbia and Russia, including Patriarch Porfirije, the Governor of Saint Petersburg Aleksandr Beglov, the Mayor of Belgrade Zoran Radoji\u010di\u0107, and the Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Bocan-Harchenko. The presence of such figures suggests that the event goes beyond a purely local or commemorative act, taking on a clear dimension of state and diplomatic protocol and highlighting its political significance.<\/p>\n

Identical bronze busts of Alexander Nevsky have been installed in several Russian cities, including the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Saint Petersburg, as well as in public spaces in Krasnodar, Astrakhan, and Azov. The replication of nearly identical sculptures points to a standardized narrative of the past, in which complex historical figures are reduced to simplified symbols, leaving limited space for critical reflection.<\/p>\n

The pedestal bears a quote attributed to Alexander Nevsky: \u201cGod is not in power, but in truth,\u201d inscribed in both Russian and Serbian. While seemingly universal, this message can also be interpreted as part of a broader symbolic strategy, in which religious discourse is used to reinforce particular political and cultural narratives.<\/p>\n

The selection of figures represented in public space raises questions about why certain historical personalities are repeatedly commemorated through nearly identical monuments, and who decides which values and narratives are given visibility in the city. In this sense, the bust of Alexander Nevsky functions not only as a reminder of the past, but also as an active element in shaping contemporary political, cultural, and identity-related processes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>
