The immediate trigger was the demand for the dismissal of the state television director and the Minister of Police. The protests began with a gathering at Republic Square but quickly escalated into street clashes following police intervention.

At around 3:30 PM, a police officer, Nedeljko Kosović, died after falling from a height of five meters on Masarikova Street. Subsequently, around 4:00 PM, a group of about fifty policemen stationed at the corner of Admirala Geprata and Kneza Miloša Streets opened fire, injuring five civilians. Among them was 17-year-old Branivoje Milinović, who was fatally shot at the same location.

The military leadership of the time unlawfully deployed tanks to the streets, forcibly ending the demonstrations.

On March 10th, student protests begin, lasting for the next four days.
