In the medieval period, the location of Defterdar's Gate was occupied by the so-called North Gate, connecting the Upper and Lower Towns.<\/p>\n<p>The present gate was erected in the last decade of the 17th century, during the Austrian rule when fortification works were underway. The external arched portal, surmounted by a triangular pediment, was constructed according to the design by Andrea Cornaro. It acquired its Turkish name in the 18th century when the Ottomans reoccupied Belgrade.
