Islam started spreading across the Balkans with the growing success of Ottoman conquests. After the Serbian medieval state fell into Ottoman hands, Islam began to dominate in certain areas of the Balkans.
\nThw ethnically diverse islamic population of Belgrade mostly originated from the long-lasting process of Islamizing local Slavic populace, as well as the migrations of Turks and other Muslims from the east. The Ottoman siege of Belgrade represents a turning point in the history of Belgrade, when the construction of mosques began as a result of the growing Muslim population.
\nAside from three periods under Austrian reign, the majority of Belgrade's citizens were Muslim, a factor which contributed to the construction of a large number of Islamic architecture.
\nWith Price Milo\u0161's decree in 1868, religious freedom had been granted to Muslims in Serbia, which marks the beginning of the Islamic community's constitution in Serbia. Following the Berlin Congress in 1878, the organization of the Islamic religious community in Serbia was established, with a Mufti in charge thereof.
\nThe status of Islam as a religion was made official in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes with a new consitution in June 1921.
\nThe unity of the Islamic communiy was confirmed in January 1930 as the position of chief of the Islamic community had been established. However, this law was changed in 1936 and muftiates were abolished altogether.
\nAfter World War 2, a reorganization and adaptation to new circumstances of the Islamic community ensued. The Islamic community of Serbia operated as part of Islamic community of Yugoslavia, which was based in Pri\u0161tina.
\nNowadays, the Islamic community of Serbia is the main governing body of all Muslims in Serbia organized into a Rijaset (the main governing body of all Islamic communities in the Balkans)<\/p>\n

\nEtni\u010dki raznolika islamska zajednica Srbije je uglavnom nastajala dugotrajnim procesom islamizacije lokalnog slovenskog \u017eivlja i doseljavanjem Turaka i drugih muslimana s istoka. Osvajanje Beograda 1521.godine od strane Osmanlija ozna\u010dava prelomni trenutak u istoriji Beograda,kada uve\u0107anjem broja muslimanskog stanovni\u0161tva, po\u010dinje izgradnja islamskih verskih objekata.<\/p>\n

Izuzimaju\u0107i tri perioda, kada su Beograd osvajali Austrijanci ( 1688-1690. 1717-1739.i 1789-1791.godine ) ve\u0107insko stanovni\u0161tvo do sredine XIX veka predstavljali su muslimani, \u0161to je uslovilo izgradnju velikog broja islamskih verskih objekata.
\nUkazom kneza Mihaila Obrenovi\u0107a i Dr\u017eavnog saveta 1868. godine, muslimanima u Srbiji zvani\u010dno je priznata sloboda ispovedanja islama \u0161to ozna\u010dava po\u010detak konstituisanja Islamske verske zajednice na prostoru Srbije. Posle Berlinskog kongresa 1878. godine zvani\u010dno je uspostavljena organizacija Islamske verske zajednice unutar Srbije na \u010delu sa muftijom (predstavnik verske vlasti i pravosudni tuma\u010d islamskog zakona) u Ni\u0161u.<\/p>\n

Posle Prvog svetskog rata, u Kraljevini SHS centar Vrhovnog muftijstva i vrhovnog muftije preme\u0161ten je iz Ni\u0161a u Beograd. Polo\u017eaj islama kao vere utvr\u0111en je u novoj dr\u017eavi Vidovdanskim ustavom usvojenim 28. juna 1921. godine.
\nZakonom o Islamskoj verskoj zajednici Kraljevine Jugoslavije od 30. januara 1930. godine, potvr\u0111eno je jedinstvo islamske zajednice uspostavljanjem funkcije reis-ul-ulema -vrhovnog poglavara Islamske zajednice jedne dr\u017eave. Promenom ovog zakona 1936. godine ukinuta su muftijstva i sedi\u0161te reis-ul-uleme preme\u0161teno je iz Beograda u Sarajevo.<\/p>\n

Posle Drugog svetskog rata usledilo je novo organizovanje Islamske zajednice i njeno prilago\u0111avanje novonastalim prilikama. Islamska zajednica Srbije funkcionisala je u okviru Vrhovnog Stare\u0161instva Islamske zajednice Jugoslavije sa sedi\u0161tem u Pri\u0161tini.
\nRaspadom SFRJ do\u0161lo je i do reorganizacije Islamske zajednice Srbije koja se konstitui\u0161e na Saboru u Ni\u0161u 1994. godine kada dolazi i do formiranja Beogradske islamske srednje medrese-islamske \u0161kole.
\nIslamska zajednica Srbije danas je vrhovno telo svih muslimana na teritoriji Srbije organizovana u Rijaset (glavno izvr\u0161no telo islamskih zajednica u regionu Balkana).
